Research Centre for Design of Microbial Communities in Membrane Bioreacters, EcoDesign MBR
The Danish Council for Strategic Research has founded the EcoDesign MBR Centre in the period from 2010-2016 together with companies and universities. The Centre will apply a novel approach which determines the identity, function and interactions of key microorganisms in mixed communities involved in selected environmental biotechnological processes. This understanding will be exploited to optimize the growth and activity of microbes (ecosystem design) through process studies in membrane bioreactors (MBR) in collaboration with industrial and public partners. Four applications of the MBR technology will be studied under the different research areas:
- Removal/recovery of phosphorus
- Energy efficient nitrogen removal
- Detoxification of organic micropollutants
- Control of fouling
